Power Generation up by 11.0% during 7MCY21 in Pakistan

Power generation is up by 6.6% YoY to 15,680 GWh (21,076 MW) during Jul’21, compared to 14,711 GWh (19,773 MW) during Jul’20. The rise in generation is witnessed due to higher generation of Nuclear, FO, RLNG, Wind, HSD and Bagasse.

Major contributors during Jul’21 were Hydel (Share: 30%), RLNG (Share: 20%), Coal (Share: 15%), Nuclear (Share: 11%), FO (Share: 10%), Gas (Share: 9%), Wind (Share: 4%), and HSD (Share: 0.8%).

During Jul’21, Nuclear, FO, RLNG, Wind, and HSD based power generation increased by 132% YoY, 88% YoY, 4% YoY, 60% YoY and 9% YoY, respectively. However, hydel, Coal, and Gas based generation was down by 13% YoY, 8% YoY and 8% YoY, respectively.

During Jul’21, fuel cost for power generation increased by 51% YoY to PKR 6.47/KWh mainly due to rise in gas, coal, FO and RLNG based cost of generation along with decline in hydel and solar based generation.

Fuel Cost up by 51% YoY during Jul’21

The rise in fuel cost by 51% YoY during Jul’21 was led by the following reasons:

Coal-based cost of generation was up by 33% YoY to PKR 8.41/KWh during Jul’21 due to 112% YoY rise in coal prices.

Gas-based cost of generation was also up by 17% YoY to PKR 8.17/KWh.

RLNG-based cost of generation increased by 76% YoY to PKR 12.06/KWh due to 91% YoY rise in RLNG prices to PKR 2,069/mmbtu.

FO-based cost of generation increased by 23% YoY to PKR 17.08/KWh due to 40% YoY rise in FO prices.

Hydel and solar based generation was down by 13% YoY and 2% YoY, respectively.
