Power Generation in Pakistan during May 2021

Power generation is up by 8.3% YoY to 13,010 GWh (17,486 MW) during May’21, compared to 12,017 GWh (16,151 MW) during May’20. The rise in generation is witnessed due to higher generation on FO, Gas, Coal, Nuclear and RLNG.

Major contributors during May’21 were Hydel (Share: 27%), RLNG (Share: 22%), Coal (Share: 20%), Gas (Share: 11%), Nuclear (Share: 10%), FO (Share: 6%), Wind (Share: 3%), and Solar (Share: 0.5%).

During May’21, power generation from all sources has increased except from hydel and solar-based generation.

During May’21, fuel cost for power generation increased by 33% YoY to PKR 5.70/KWh mainly due to rise in gas, coal, FO and RLNG based cost of generation.

Nuclear based generation has reached at 1,271 GWh

During May’21, nuclear based power generation increased by 39% YoY to reach all time high of 1,271 GWh compared with 915 GWh during May’20.

The rise in nuclear based power generation is witnessed mainly due to induction of Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP) in the system. KANUPP generated 646 GWh during May’21 which is 51% of the total nuclear based generation and 5% of overall all generation.

RLNG based generation up by 15% YoY during 11MFY21

During 11MFY21, power generation increased by 6.7% YoY to 115,862 GWh (14,411 MW) compared with 108,580 GWh (13,505 MW) during 11MFY20.

Major contributors during 11MFY21 were: Hydel (Share: 30%), Coal (Share: 22%), RLNG (Share: 21%), Gas (Share: 11%), Nuclear (Share: 8%) and FO (Share: 4%).

During 11MFY21, gas and wind-based generation was down by 4.3% YoY and 4.7% YoY, respectively.

During 11MFY21, fuel cost for power generation decreased by 1.9% YoY to an average of PKR 4.73/KWh mainly due to rise in hydel and nuclear-based generation.

Fuel Cost up by 33% YoY during May’21

The rise in fuel cost during May’21 was led by the following reasons:

Coal-based cost of generation was up by 10.2% YoY to PKR 7.83/KWh during May’21 due to 83% YoY rise in coal prices.

Gas-based cost of generation was also up by 26.5% YoY to PKR 7.85/KWh.

Nuclear-based cost of generation increased by 14.2% YoY to PKR 1.14/KWh.

RLNG-based cost of generation increased by 4.2% YoY to PKR 10.05/KWh.

FO-based cost of generation increased by 46.8% YoY to PKR 14.34/KWh.

Hydel-based generation was down by 22% YoY during May’21.
