SAPTL says no suspension of operations at terminal despite vessels collision

Karachi Port Trust said today that after accident, which occurred at South Asia Pakistan Terminal Limited (SAPTL, near Karachi port on March 19, involving container vessel Tolten and container vessel Hamburg Bay, the operations at SAPTL are ongoing as per normal after a little pause. MV Tolten after disembarking/embarking containers is scheduled to leave harbor tonight whereas MV Hamburg is also expected to depart as per planned schedule.

Containers which fell overboard have been located and are being recovered from sea. Pakistan Navy diving team and other assets are also rendering assistance to KPT in locating/recovering the sunken containers. Board of investigation comprised of senior officers has been ordered. Port operations at KPT and SAPTL are being undertaken as per normal.

Earlier, Hutchison Ports Pakistan has released their official version on the mishap which unfortunately happened at their terminal in the vicinity of Karachi Port yesterday. The statement says that on March 19, 2018 at 1334 hours, container vessel Tolten came in contact with another container vessel Hamburg Bay (berthed at berth no.3) while berthing on berth no 4 at South Asia Pakistan Terminals (SAPT). As a result of this contact, 21 containers stowed on the port side of vessel Tolten fell into the water.

The incident did not result in any injury. There was no suspension of operations at SAPT.

The vessel Hamburg bay completed operation at midnight at 0000 hrs on 20th March, and is expected to sail soon. CV Tolten came alongside (berth no. 4) at 1940 hrs on 19th March and operations commenced at 0419 hrs after completion of damage survey and is expected to complete by 0000 hrs on 21st March. Meanwhile, Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has deployed all available resources for surveying the channel and retrieving containers from water.

SAPT is assisting them in Operations and will provide full support to its customers.
