Power Generation up by 3.7% YoY during Jan’21

Power generation went up by 3.7% YoY to 8,079 GWh (10,859 MW) during Jan’21, compared to 7,794 GWh (10,475 MW) during Jan’20.

Major contributors during Jan’21 were: Coal (Share: 32%), Gas (Share: 17%), Hydel (Share: 13%), FO (Share: 12%), RLNG (Share: 11%), Nuclear (Share: 11%), and Wind (Share: 2%).

Coal, Hydel, FO and Nuclear-based generation increased by 2%, 23%, 22% and 25% YoY, respectively. However, Gas and RLNG-based power generation went down by 19% YoY and 4% YoY, respectively.

During Jan’21, fuel cost for power generation increased by 1.3% YoY to PKR 6.06/KWh mainly due to rise in FO based generation.

Power Generation up by 2.5% YoY during 7MFY21

Power generation is up by 2.5% YoY to 76,126 GWh (14,892 MW) during 7MFY21, compared to 74,260 GWh (14,527 MW) during same period last year.

Major contributors during 7MFY21 were: Hydel (Share: 33%), RLNG (Share: 21%), Coal (Share: 20%), Gas (Share: 11%), Nuclear (Share: 7%) and FO (Share: 5%).

FO, Hydel, RLNG and Coal-based power generation witnessed an increase of 17% YoY, 6% YoY, 6%, and 0.4% YoY respectively. However, Gas and Nuclear-based generation witnessed an increase of 13% and 3% YoY, respectively.

During 7MFY21, fuel cost for power generation went down by 8.4% YoY to an average of PKR 4.57/KWh mainly due to rise in Hydel and coal-based generation.

Fuel Cost up by 1.3% YoY during Jan’21

The rise in fuel cost during Jan’21 was led by the following reasons:

Coal-based cost of generation was up by 8.7% YoY to PKR 6.47/KWh during Jan’21 due to 8.6% YoY rise in coal prices.

Gas-based cost of generation increased by 31.6% YoY to PKR 7.62/KWh during Jan’21.

FO-based generation was up by 22% YoY during Jan’21 which was one of the most expensive source of power generation.

Wind-based generation went down by 3% YoY during Jan’21.

46 GWh were generated on HSD, which was the most expensive source of power generation.
