Power Generation in Pakistan up by 4.8% YoY during 9MFY21

All-time high generation on Coal during Mar’21 – up by 31% YoY

Power generation is up by 30% YoY to 8,965 GWh (12,049 MW) during Mar’21, compared to 6,911 GWh (9,289 MW) during Mar’20. The rise in generation is witnessed due to low base.

Major contributors during Mar’21 were Coal (Share: 31%), RLNG (Share: 21%), Hydel (Share: 19%), Gas (Share: 12%), Nuclear (Share: 10%), FO (Share: 2.6%), Wind (Share: 1.9%) and Bagasse (Share: 1.0%).

During Mar’21, power generation from all sources has increased except Gas based generation which is down by 12% YoY. During Mar’21, fuel cost for power generation increased by 13.9% YoY to PKR 5.55/KWh mainly due to rise in coal and gas based cost of generation.

RLNG based generation up by 15% YoY during 9MFY21

During 9MFY21, power generation increased by 4.8% YoY to 92,371 GWh (14,047 MW) compared with 88,172 GWh (13,408 MW) during 9MFY20.

Major contributors during 9MFY21 were: Hydel (Share: 31%), Coal (Share: 22%), RLNG (Share: 20%), Gas (Share: 11%), Nuclear (Share: 7%) and FO (Share: 5%).

During 9MFY21, Gas, Nuclear and Wind based generation is down by 12% YoY, 2% YoY and 5% YoY, respectively.

During 9MFY21, fuel cost for power generation decreased by 8.5% YoY to an average of PKR 4.50/KWh mainly due to rise in Hydel-based generation along with decline in RLNG-based cost of generation.

Fuel Cost up by 13.9% YoY during Mar’21

The rise in fuel cost during Mar’21 was led by the following reasons:

Coal-based cost of generation was up by 10.9% YoY to PKR 7.26/KWh during Mar’21 due to 34% YoY rise in coal prices.

Gas-based cost of generation was also up by 19.2% YoY to PKR 7.65/KWh during Mar’21.
